In today’s blog post, I am going to be telling you all about 3 things you can start doing to have a perfect day, every day. Make sure to read the entire post so you don’t miss a thing! Let’s get straight into number 1, shall we?
#1 Learn why you procrastinate so you can reduce doing it
We have all been there. You start the day really productive, “Im going to get so much done today, I just know it!”
And then suddenly, it is 1am and you have spent the last 6 hours watching videos on youtube and lying on your bed, and now you find yourself in the deep depths of the video platform learning about the water percentage of a watermelon and the country it originated from. Sound familiar?
Well that is procrastination at its finest! We are all guilty of this, and I am here to tell you not to worry. What you are doing is human nature, procrastination is human nature.
Before you can attempt to reduce the amount you procrastinate, it is first best to understand why you actually do it. Bring on the biology!
There is two main parts of the brain that are important to note when it comes to procrastinating- the pre-frontal cortex and the limbic system. The pre-frontal cortex is like your scheduler, your task planner, whilst the limbic system is the pleasure part of your brain, hence the procrastination.
The reason behind why you procrastinate is because your limbic system at that moment in time, has more control than your pre-frontal cortex. And if your limbic system wants pleasure, then of course you are going to want to put off the boring work tasks over eating ice cream in bed watching Friends. Starting to make more sense?
So, if there is a way that you can train your pre-frontal cortex and bring it back in control, you can reduce or even stop procrastinating altogether!
I have tested a few things myself that have really had an impact on my mindset and helped me to bring my pre-frontal cortex back in control when I feel my procrastinating. I am going to share two of them with you that are very simple and very easy to carry out.
The first is to stop doing whatever you are procrastinating on and start writing things down, more specifically write down your current goals. The reason I find this helpful is because it reminds me why I am doing the work and what I am striving for. This instantly brings me back to focus and gives me a huge mindset push. Think of it as a little kick of motivation, a reminder of your reasons why and what you are trying to reach.
The second is to take some deep breaths whilst listening to mindful music. The combination of the deep breaths and the soothing music helps concentrate your brain again. It brings it back to what you were trying to focus on before you drifted path. I find an app called calm particularly good for this. It has a variety of music tracks that all really help control your mind and bring you back to the present when you feel yourself drifting off.
#2 Wake Up Early!
Have you ever watched videos or read content about the benefits of waking up at 5am? You will have most likely come across some form of content on this topic, and all the claims are 100% true. Waking up early is one of the best things you can do to create a perfect day. By waking up earlier, you are ahead of the game. You are awake when your competition is asleep. If you are currently working a 9-5 and using your free time to side hustle and create that freedom you have always desired, wake up earlier. If you wake up at 5am every day, you are giving yourself realistically 3 hours extra per day where you can work on the life you want to create for yourself. What would 3 more hours each day mean to you? Would it allow you to spend time with the family in the morning and have breakfast together? What about going for a morning run to improve your health? Those 3 hours are life changing. Imagine if you got your most important tasks for the day completed before everyone else was even awake. Imagine how much more productive your day will be? I challenge you to wake up at 5am every day for 30 days. I guarantee that if you put in the effort and use that time wisely, you will thank me for it. If you are trying to quit your job or achieve the financial freedom you so desperately desire, then you need to put in the hours. If you want a 1% life, it requires doing the 1% work.
#3 Plan Tomorrow Today
Do you think that the top entrepreneurs in the world start their day without a plan of exactly what needs to be done? Heck no! They plan tomorrow the night before. They write down exactly what needs to be accomplished the following day and then they wake up with a clear direction of what to get done, and they go and do it. Planning tomorrow today is going to make sure that you wake up knowing what needs to be done. You can wake up and start your day off with a plan of action, a direction to head in. I urge you to get a journal if you don’t have one already, and every night write down what your goals are, what your tasks are for the following day. So, when you hit that alarm clock in the morning, you can be sure that from the moment you open your eyes to the moment you close your eyes, your day is planned out. Not only does it reduce procrastination and increase productivity, but it sets you up for success. It builds your discipline up and trains your mindset. Plan tomorrow today!
