Instagram downloads rise as usage rises in India – Sensor Tower

Despite the popularity of TikTok, the number of Instagram users is growing, especially in India, where TikTok is banned and Reels has become the main platform for short videos.

This is evidenced by Sensor Tower data from its fourth-quarter 2021 report.

As the report shows, Instagram had its best quarter since 2014 in terms of downloads, with app installs up 10% from the third quarter.

TikTok has held the lead in installs for the last two years in a row, but Instagram showed significant growth on Android, mostly driven by Indian users.

According to this chart, 39% of Instagram downloads in the fourth quarter came from India, where Meta promoted Instagram as a better alternative to TikTok.

However, despite Instagram’s growth, TikTok is likely to remain a key app for younger users in other regions.

The growth of Instagram users in India may lead the social network to focus more on developing the Indian market and creating products and features tailored to that market.
