Instagram is in the process of transferring Direct Messaging to Direct via computer. The changes were discovered by Jane Wong, who shared a series of screenshots on Twitter:

As Wong states in one of the tweets above, Instagram Direct on the desktop is very similar to Facebook Messenger.
Perhaps motivated by the popularity of Facebook Messenger, Instagram wants to become a place for direct messaging.
Last week, Instagram introduced Threads, a standalone messaging app with a list of Instagram best friends.
Also, according to Jane Wong, Instagram is introducing another feature, similar to the one in Messenger, a section where all the media used in the correspondence are located.
Recall that earlier Instagram removed the subscription tab and launched a new mode for creating stories.
