In Tik-Tok, you can not only upload your videos and stick over strangers, but also communicate with subscribers thanks to the built-in messenger. The principle of operation resembles Direct on Instagram. This is not the main function of the application, and not everyone knows how to write messages or where the Inbox is located.
The article will tell you where to find incoming messages, how to reply to subscribers, how to write to other TikTokers.

How to enable private messages in Tik-Tok
You do not need to specifically enable the function – it is available by default, but we advise you to adjust who can write to you and who cannot, so that the PM is not inundated with spam. To do this, go to the privacy settings and move the sliders.
Privacy settings
We go to the main page of the profile, click on the menu (3 dots in the upper right corner).
We find the “Privacy” tab.
In it, we need a tab “Who can send you private messages” in the “Security” section.
PS This item does not affect who you can send messages to, it only affects your inbox.
By default, only friends can write to you. What are the settings here:
- All – any of your subscribers can write to you.
- Friends – only those subscribers to whom you are subscribed (that is, those with whom you have a mutual subscription) can write to you.
- No one – you can completely disable the message function.
Advice: if the account is very young, you can leave it in the “All” or “Friends” settings. If you are gaining popularity or have already become a Tik-Tok star, change the settings to “Friends” or “Nobody” so as not to parse tons of PM emails.

How to open private messages in Tik-Tok
As soon as the user opens Tik-Tok, he sees a recommendation feed. At the very bottom there is a section “Inbox” (an icon with an envelope). This section displays all the activity of other users in relation to you – likes, subscriptions, comments, news from Tik-Tok, hashtags, mentions and incoming messages.
If you click on the name “All activity”, then you can configure what exactly to display in the inbox section. For example, you can display only likes or only subscriptions. Messages are hidden in the airplane icon (an exact copy of Direct Instagram).
If there is an incoming letter, next to the icon there will also be a red circle with a number – this is the number of incoming messages.
Configuring dialogs
There are settings for each dialog – open the desired dialog and customize it (you need to click 3 dots in the upper right corner of an open correspondence).
It can be pinned above all other dialogs (useful when you do not want to lose sight of important correspondence), disable notifications on it, complain or completely block the user (for example, if an annoying spammer writes).
You can also pin the dialog without opening the correspondence – in the general dialog window, hold down the desired one and in the pop-up window, click “Pin at the top”. There is also an option to delete a dialog.
How to write and send messages on Tik-Tok
To reply to a message, click on “Inbox” in the main screen, then on the airplane icon, then open the correspondence and write a reply.
In order to write a message to another user (just write again, and not reply to his incoming message), you must be subscribed to this person. You cannot write to everyone in TT (and this is correct, otherwise users would not have time to view the dialogues).
4 ways to write a message:
- open the correspondence and manually find the desired dialogue;
- click on the plus sign and find it from the list of those with whom dialogues have already been conducted;
- click on the plus sign and find a user by nickname;
- open the profile of the user you are subscribed to and click on the “Message” button.
Important: if the user to whom you want to write a message has not changed the standard privacy settings, and he has “Friends” there, then you can write to him only if you have a mutual subscription. This refers to the fourth method, when you simply open someone else’s profile and click on the “Message” button.
If he is not subscribed to you, and you are trying to write him a message, a warning will pop up “This user is not subscribed to you, and you cannot send him messages.”
Messenger capabilities
What functions are available for correspondence in the built-in Tik-Tok messenger?
Emoji – you can add a smiley to the correspondence (you need to click the smiley icon on the right side in the message sending window, it is there alone, you will not miss).
GIF – GIFs are loaded from the free service GIPHY.com, and trendy ones are immediately highlighted + you can find any in the search by keyword.
Links cannot be sent in messages… Rather, they turn out to be non-clickable. This will disappoint those who consider Tik-Tok as a way to promote affiliate programs. While the only clickable link is placed in the profile, the function is not immediately available and not for everyone – first you need to gain from 1,000 subscribers or more.
Each tiktoker has an individual number of subscribers at which a section for adding a link to the profile appears – some have 1,000 subscribers, and some have 10,000.
Actions with messages – the sent text can be copied, sent to another user or deleted. For a drop-down window to appear, you need to hold down the selected message.
Video repost… Video from TT can be shared in the app’s PM, for this click on “Share” and select “Message” in the pop-up window.
How to recover messages in Tik-Tok
In Tik-Tok, it is impossible to recover deleted messages and there is no function for archiving correspondence, so it is better not to delete the dialogue if it is important to you. If you are afraid someday to accidentally delete the correspondence and lose all of its contents, you can take screenshots in advance or ask the interlocutor later to send your screenshots if he has saved your correspondence.
Conclusion
Personal messages in Tik-Tok do not stand out in anything special – a minimum of opportunities, only the most necessary. In principle, this is enough for now, since this is not the main function of TT. Perhaps in the future, developers will reconsider their relationship to the messenger and add new functionality there, for example, clickable links.
